Context Clue Spotters
Context Clue Spotters helps students build confidence by discovering the meaning of new words using the clues already in the sentence. This activity encourages close reading, critical thinking, and vocabulary independence. It works beautifully with magical vocabulary from Wands & Wings, where context clues are woven naturally into the story.
How it works:
-
Choose a sentence from the book that includes a challenging or magical word.
-
Students highlight or underline the context clues around the word.
-
Students write what they think the word means based on the clues only.
-
Students check the dictionary definition and compare.
-
Students explain which clues helped them the most.
Example from Wands & Wings
Word: bewildered
Sentence: “Tia looked around, completely bewildered, as the cottage rearranged itself.”
Context Clues: “looked around,” “completely,” “as the cottage rearranged itself”
Student Inference: confused or unsure what’s happening
Dictionary Check: confused, puzzled
Which clues helped? The cottage moving around made her confused.
